Welcome to The Lonely Mouth Project
We’re not just here to chase the best scran in Scotland — we’re here to tell the stories that live behind them. The phrase “kuchisabishii” (口寂しい) — a Japanese word for “lonely mouth,” that restless craving to eat when you’re not even hungry — captures something we understand deeply. That hunger isn’t always for food. Sometimes it’s for connection, for meaning, for something real.
Scotland’s food scene is wild, weird, and full of untold stories. We’re digging into more than just what’s on the plate — we’re talking land, labour, legacy. From windswept islands to city backstreets, we’re spotlighting chefs, growers, fishers, foragers, and fearless food rebels who are changing how we eat and why it matters.
This isn’t about fine dining flexes or chasing trends. It’s about getting under the skin of Scottish food culture — the grit, the graft, the community, the soul. The Lonely Mouth Project exists to amplify voices, uncover origins, and share the social, cultural, and environmental impact behind every forkful.
We believe food is never just food. It’s politics. It’s history. It’s identity. And it’s bloody delicious when you know where it comes from.
Come hungry. Stay curious.
This is Scotland on a plate — raw, real, and ready to be heard.
